Advertising or marketing agency: how to choose the scope

The label does not define the entire service. Choose a team according to the problem you need to solve and the scope it can demonstrate.

Advertising or marketing agency: start with the problem

The assignment matters more than the agency's label. Choosing an advertising or marketing agency begins with explaining what needs to change in your business. Perhaps an offering needs to be introduced; perhaps the problem lies in understanding the audience or organizing how inquiries are handled.

Business names do not always describe the same scope. Two companies called marketing agencies may offer different services, just as two advertising agencies may have different capabilities. Ask which decisions they will take on, what they will deliver and what will remain your responsibility before comparing their proposals.

A specific need allows you to ask useful questions. Instead of requesting a campaign to sell more without context, explain what product you offer, to whom, where the difficulty arises and what information you have. Then distinguish the observed problem from your first hypothesis about the solution that might resolve it.

The choice also depends on what has already been resolved. If you know your audience and need a piece to communicate an offering, the assignment may be limited. If you still do not know what the person needs, hiring only advertising does not replace research or the business's prior decisions.

Marketing and advertising: related fields, not opposites

Marketing covers more than promoting an offering. The AMA definition of marketing includes creating, communicating, delivering and exchanging offerings of value. This perspective helps distinguish communication work from decisions about product, price or distribution, without assuming every agency can resolve them completely.

Advertising works on one part of the journey. It can help introduce an offering, explain a difference or invite an action through defined messages and media. That work needs to relate to the overall strategy; an ad does not by itself fix a confusing purchasing experience.

Scopes can overlap within the same team. An advertising agency may offer research and planning, while a marketing agency may design advertising campaigns. The useful distinction is not who owns a word, but which functions it substantiates and accepts in the specific project.

Commercial decisions retain their own responsible person. An agency can research prices, competition or satisfaction and make recommendations, but the company must define who decides. Do not confuse receiving a study with having authorized a change in product, price or the conditions offered to customers.

Scope becomes visible in production

Digital and in-person describe contexts, not exclusive domains

Advertising is not limited to traditional media. An advertising agency may work with television, radio, print media or digital ads. Nor does all marketing happen on social networks: in-person contact, distribution and service can form part of a broader strategy.

Digital marketing names a field of work. It includes activities using digital channels and tools, but does not replace all marketing functions. A strategy can combine web content, events and commercial conversations when every touchpoint has a clear function and a responsible person.

A live experience is not exclusively digital. In our live marketing guide we develop how to design an understandable interaction. It can be supported by screens or forms, but also needs people, space and service. Its relevance depends on the objective and context, not on fitting it into a label.

The channel is chosen after understanding the need. A platform being fashionable does not demonstrate that it suits your audience. Ask what the person will see, what they can do and what happens afterward. Also review the resources needed to sustain service when the first interaction ends.

Compare without declaring a winner

Turn the need into a verifiable scope

A clear brief reduces different interpretations of the assignment. Record the problem, audience, expected response, available information and restrictions. Our explanation of audiences in marketing helps distinguish whom you seek to understand from a list of contacts. Add outstanding questions so assumptions are not presented as shared decisions.

Deliverables should be recognizable when received. A strategy, a graphic piece and a report are different products of the work. Describe their format, content and expected review. If you request a campaign, clarify what message preparation, production, distribution and evaluation include.

Costs need categories that can be compared. Separate agency work, production, media buying and additional expenses where applicable. Ask which changes affect the budget and who authorizes them. A final figure without sufficient scope makes it difficult to recognize what service you are buying and what is excluded.

Continuity should be planned as well as delivery. If the proposal includes content marketing, ask who will update the pieces and respond to inquiries. The article on content marketing addresses how to connect questions, formats and action. An isolated publication does not by itself sustain that entire journey.

Choose an advertising agency with evidence of work

A case should explain context and execution. Review what problem the team addressed, what it did and what results it can document. The GX cases allow specific work to be observed; each retains its own limits. A well-presented piece does not turn a past experience into a guarantee for your project.

Capability is checked through specific questions. Ask which specialties participate, who coordinates the project and which services depend on third parties. Request examples relevant to the assignment, not just awards or attractive images. If a capability has not been demonstrated, record the question before turning it into a contractual expectation.

Communication is also part of the scope. Agreeing on a contact person, review points and criteria for resolving changes helps organize the work. It does not require constant meetings: it requires important decisions to be retrievable and the client to know when they need to provide information or approve something.

Comparing proposals requires a common criterion. Evaluate understanding of the problem, scope, resources, responsibilities and limits using the same questions. A lower budget may include less work; a higher one does not by itself demonstrate more quality. Ask for clarification when two proposals use the same words for different deliverables.

Evaluate the assignment and decide the next step

Evaluation begins before campaign production. Define what you want to observe and how you could verify it. The guide to measuring brand experiences distinguishes participation, understanding and other signals. Do not use visits, inquiries and contracts as if they were the same result; each unit answers a different question.

Results require context for interpretation. Record the period, source and execution conditions. If the offering, price and communication change simultaneously, it will be difficult to attribute an effect to a single piece. The agency can provide analysis, but should not turn a coincidence in timing into an automatic causal conclusion.

Useful learning can lead to reviewing the assignment. If communication attracts questions no one can answer, operational capacity may be missing. If people do not understand the offering, a clearer explanation may be needed. Check those hypotheses against evidence before requesting more ads or opening another channel.

The final decision should remain linked to the problem. Choose an advertising agency, a marketing agency or a combination of specialists when their capabilities meet the agreed scope. Preserve what was decided, who took it on and what remains pending. That clarity allows progress without expecting a label to solve everything.

Frequently asked questions

Does an advertising agency work only with traditional media?

No. It can develop communication in traditional and digital media. Check its capabilities and the agreed scope: the business name does not demonstrate which channels, services or responsibilities it will include in your project.

Does a marketing agency necessarily offer every service?

No. It may specialize in some functions or coordinate different suppliers. Ask what it researches, proposes and executes, and what requires a decision from your company, before interpreting its offering as a comprehensive solution.

Is experiential marketing an exclusively digital form?

No. It designs experiences and interactions that can be in-person, digital or combined. Tools are chosen according to the audience's needs and the context of use, not just the channel's label.

What should I request before hiring an agency?

A recognizable scope with deliverables, an itemized budget, responsible people, reviews and evaluation criteria. Review documented cases and outstanding questions; no proposal should guarantee commercial results it cannot justify.
